U.S. authorities have announced a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Olalekan Abimbola Olawusi, a 48-year-old Nigerian man wanted in connection with the death of his infant son. Olawusi is facing charges of first-degree murder and two counts of inflicting serious bodily injury to a child.
The charges are related to an incident that occurred on April 3, 2017, in Providence, Rhode Island, when emergency responders found Olawusi’s 3-month-old son in critical condition. The child was bleeding from the mouth and nose and showed signs of severe injury, including skull and rib fractures. Despite being placed on life support, the infant succumbed to his injuries and passed away six months later, on October 31, 2017.
Olawusi was initially arrested and charged with first-degree child abuse shortly after the incident, but he was released on the same day. Following the child’s death, the charges were upgraded to murder. Investigators believe that Olawusi fled the U.S. shortly after the incident. According to the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS), Olawusi boarded a flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York on June 20, 2017, using his Nigerian passport. Authorities now believe he is hiding in Nigeria, potentially with the help of family members.
Olawusi, who may also go by the alias Olekun Olawusi, is described as being 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing approximately 185 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. U.S. officials have raised concerns that he could pose a danger to other children, and they are urging anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward.
Don Freeman, Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal, appealed for assistance in locating Olawusi, emphasizing the gravity of the case. Authorities are offering the reward as an incentive for tips that can lead to his capture and bring justice to the victim.
