In a tragic turn of events, Stewart Rosenwasser, a former prosecutor and retired judge in Orange County, NY, died by suicide on Tuesday as FBI agents arrived at his residence to arrest him in connection with a corruption investigation.

Authorities were at Rosenwasser’s home in Campbell Hall to execute an arrest warrant related to allegations of bribery. Sources indicate that he was under investigation for accepting bribes totaling $63,000 to influence the prosecution of two individuals connected to Mout’z Soudani, the man accused of paying the bribes.

Witnesses reported a tense atmosphere, with one local resident, Linn Cartagena, recounting, “I was standing by the front door, my friend went outside the front door, and they screamed at us to get in the house.” Initial reports suggest that there may have been an exchange of gunfire during the incident.

The FBI has confirmed that an agent-involved shooting occurred and is currently being reviewed by the agency’s Inspection Division. “The FBI takes all shooting incidents involving our agents seriously,” a spokesperson stated, adding that further details cannot be provided at this time due to the ongoing investigation.

Rosenwasser resigned from his position at the Orange County District Attorney’s office in June amid the unfolding investigation. Federal prosecutors from the Southern District of New York have opted not to comment on the case.
