During a recent PaleyFest panel, Gayle King, co-host of CBS Mornings, addressed the contentious interview with author Ta-Nehisi Coates that sparked significant debate earlier this fall. King described the experience as a “learning opportunity” for the show’s team, emphasizing the challenges of navigating difficult conversations in journalism.
The panel featured King alongside executive producer Shawna Thomas, co-hosts Nate Burleson and Tony Dokoupil, and special host Vladimir Duthiers. The discussion was moderated by Lisa Ling, who brought up the implications of the Coates interview, which had drawn criticism for its handling of sensitive topics regarding Israel and Palestine.
King acknowledged the responsibility that comes with addressing “hot-button issues,” highlighting the need for thoughtful questioning and awareness of audience reception. “Life is hard. The news is hard. Sometimes, you have hard conversations on television,” she stated.
The interview with Coates was particularly controversial due to Dokoupil’s probing questions about Coates’ views, which were deemed “radical” by some. CBS News executives later indicated that the questioning fell short of the network’s editorial standards, leading to internal discussions on biases and journalistic integrity. Paramount co-CEO George Cheeks supported the need for further review, while Shari Redstone backed Dokoupil publicly.
Thomas commented on the ongoing discourse, noting, “There have been a lot of conversations about that conversation. Hard conversations. And they will continue.” She expressed hope that these discussions would lead to improved journalism and listening skills among the team.
This incident occurs amidst broader upheaval within CBS News and its parent company, Paramount Global, which is set to be sold to Skydance Media by mid-2025. Recent layoffs have affected numerous staff members, including prominent figures like Jeff Glor. Additionally, Ingrid Ciprian-Matthews recently stepped down as president of CBS News, prompting a restructuring of the leadership team.
Despite the controversy surrounding the Dokoupil-Coates interview, the panel focused primarily on the show’s origins and the backgrounds of its on-air talent, dedicating only a brief moment to the upheaval from the interview.
As CBS Mornings navigates these challenges, King and her colleagues remain committed to engaging with complex issues thoughtfully and responsibly.
