Equatorial Guinea is reeling from a scandal involving Baltasar Ebang Engonga, the Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF). Engonga, a prominent economist and government official, has been arrested amid allegations of secretly recording over 400 intimate videos with married women, including high-profile figures such as the wives of ministers, his brother’s wife, and even the sister of the country’s president.
The scandal came to light during a fraud investigation, which led authorities to search Engonga’s office and home. There, they uncovered multiple CDs containing explicit footage. The tapes, which were reportedly filmed with the consent of the women involved, show Engonga engaging in sexual acts in various locations, including his office, hotels, and private residences. The footage has since leaked online, sparking outrage across the nation.
Attorney General Nzang Nguema, addressing the situation, emphasized that while the encounters appeared consensual, the risk of public health concerns is paramount. He warned that the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) could be a serious issue, especially as many of the women involved are married, exposing their spouses and others to potential harm. Nguema stressed that if Engonga knowingly exposed others to these risks, he could face charges for endangering public health.
In response to the scandal, the government has implemented immediate suspensions for any officials implicated in sexual misconduct, citing a “zero tolerance” policy for behavior that undermines public service integrity. The Vice President, Nguema Mangue, condemned the actions as violations of the country’s Code of Conduct and Public Ethics Law.
Engonga, known as “Bello,” has held several influential roles, making this scandal one of the largest in the country’s history. Investigations are ongoing to determine if criminal charges, including those related to public health risks, will be pursued.
The unfolding situation has generated significant debate across Equatorial Guinea, with many citizens demanding swift and severe consequences for Engonga. As the investigation continues, the country watches closely to see what legal actions will follow.
