Vinicius Jr., the 24-year-old winger from Real Madrid and Brazil, has been named the FIFA Men’s Player of the Year at the prestigious FIFA Best Awards in Doha. The Brazilian star edged out strong contenders including Manchester City’s Rodri, who recently claimed the Ballon d’Or, and his Real Madrid teammate, Jude Bellingham, to win this coveted honor.
Vinicius played a pivotal role in Real Madrid’s successful 2023-24 campaign, helping the club secure both La Liga and Champions League titles. Over the season, he scored 24 goals and provided 11 assists across all competitions. His contributions also included a key goal in the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund.
This marks Vinicius’ first FIFA Best award, a notable achievement after his club boycotted the Ballon d’Or ceremony in October, where he lost out to Rodri. Reflecting on his journey, Vinicius shared an emotional message: “It seemed impossible for me to reach this stage… I came from a small place, close to poverty and crime. Now I’m here,” he said, expressing gratitude for the recognition.
Alongside Vinicius’ win, the women’s FIFA Best Player of the Year was awarded to Spain’s Aitana Bonmati of Barcelona, who claimed the title for the second consecutive year.
In addition to the individual awards, Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti was named Best Men’s Coach after leading the club to a historic double, securing both La Liga and the Champions League. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s Emma Hayes earned the Best Women’s Coach award for her remarkable achievements with the U.S. women’s national team and Chelsea.
Other notable awards included the Puskas Award for Best Goal of the Year, which went to Alejandro Garnacho for his stunning overhead kick for Manchester United, and the inaugural Marta Award, awarded to Brazilian forward Marta for her spectacular goal against Jamaica.
The Best Men’s Goalkeeper award was claimed by Emiliano Martinez of Argentina and Aston Villa, while the Women’s Goalkeeper honor went to Alyssa Naeher of the Chicago Red Stars.
Vinicius’ triumph at the FIFA Best Awards further solidifies his status as one of football’s brightest stars, capping a season filled with exceptional achievements.
