Donald Trump declared his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at Mar-a-Lago a “very productive” engagement, focusing on significant issues such as fentanyl, illegal immigration, and trade relations. Trudeau’s visit comes as Canada attempts to counter Trump’s threat of a 25% tariff on Canadian goods, a move that could have substantial economic repercussions.
Trudeau arrived in West Palm Beach on Friday evening, following a phone call with Trump earlier in the week. During this call, Trump announced plans for tariffs on imports from both Canada and Mexico starting in January, prompting concerns from Canadian officials.

During their dinner together, attended by Trump’s commerce secretary nominee Howard Lutnick and Canada’s public safety minister Dominic LeBlanc, both leaders acknowledged the complex nature of their relationship, which has seen both cooperation and tension in the past. Trudeau expressed optimism about future conversations, citing successful trade negotiations during Trump’s first term.
The Canadian government is actively seeking to mitigate the impact of potential tariffs, which could affect many industries, including oil, gas, and automotive sectors.
