South Korea’s National Assembly voted to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol on Saturday, December 14, following his controversial attempt to impose martial law. The motion passed with 204 votes in favor and 85 against, igniting celebrations among protesters gathered outside parliament.
In his response, Yoon acknowledged the decision, expressing that he would “temporarily pause” but emphasized his dedication to the future of the country and its people. “I will not give up,” he declared in a statement issued by the presidential office. “I will continue to give my all for the nation until the very end.”
Under South Korean law, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will serve as acting president. He assured the public that he would focus on ensuring the smooth and stable running of the government.
The impeachment followed a tense political standoff that began on December 3 when Yoon briefly declared martial law and deployed troops to parliament. The move, which was intended to control the growing opposition, backfired as lawmakers resisted and successfully overturned the decree, fueling a widespread outcry and calls for Yoon’s removal.
