In a dazzling ceremony in Paris, Manchester City’s Rodri and Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmati were honored as the winners of the Ballon d’Or in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively.
Rodri, who played a crucial role in Manchester City’s success last season, winning the Premier League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup, also shone on the international stage by helping Spain clinch the Euro 2024 title. His victory was surprising, given that Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior was favored to win after his impressive performances, including a standout role in securing the Champions League title.
Real Madrid’s delegation boycotted the event, expressing discontent over the award outcome, citing a lack of respect for Vinicius. They suggested that if Vinicius didn’t win, then teammate Dani Carvajal should have been considered. Despite the controversy, Rodri’s achievement marks his first Ballon d’Or, recognizing his essential contributions throughout the season.
In the women’s category, Aitana Bonmati secured her second consecutive Ballon d’Or after leading Barcelona to an unprecedented continental quadruple and winning the Nations League with Spain.
Other notable awards included the Kopa Trophy for Lamine Yamal, the Yashin Trophy for goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, and joint recognition for Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe as Best Strikers. Carlo Ancelotti and Emma Hayes were named Best Men’s and Women’s Coaches, respectively, while Real Madrid and Barcelona Femeni were awarded Best Club and Women’s Club of the Year.
This year’s awards reaffirm the growing impact and talent in both men’s and women’s football on the global stage.
