Troops from the 1 Brigade of the Nigerian Army have successfully arrested Bako Wurgi, also known as Bako NaGarba, a prominent bandit kingpin and arms dealer suspected of involvement in the murder of Alhaji Isa Mohammad Bawa, the Emir of Gobir in Sokoto State.
The arrest took place on December 14, around 10 PM, following intelligence reports that Wurgi was receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Shinkafi, Zamfara State, for injuries sustained during a clash with rival bandits. According to counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, Wurgi was found with multiple gunshot wounds and cuts.
Two of Wurgi’s associates managed to flee, while an individual assisting in transporting him via tricycle was apprehended. Wurgi is suspected of playing a key role in the kidnapping and eventual murder of the Emir in July 2024, after ransom negotiations failed.
The operation marks a significant blow against banditry in the North-West region, with local residents in Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara expressing hope that this success will lead to further victories in curbing violence and insecurity. Wurgi is currently in custody, and a manhunt is underway for his remaining accomplices.
