Lionel Messi has added another prestigious individual accolade to his storied career, winning the 2024 Landon Donovan MLS MVP Award. This honor comes after a remarkable season in which Messi led Inter Miami to unprecedented success, including winning the Supporters’ Shield and securing the MLS Eastern Conference title. Despite battling injuries and spending time away for international duties, Messi played just 19 regular-season games, but his impact was undeniable, with 20 goals and 16 assists, helping his team achieve a league-record 74 points.
Messi’s performance saw him top MLS in goal contributions, with 36 combined goals and assists, and an average of 2.18 goal contributions per 90 minutes—the highest in league history. Miami only lost once in the regular season when Messi played, recording 12 wins, 1 loss, and 6 draws. His ability to score or assist in 15 of those 19 games underlined his value to the team.
The Argentinian legend’s impressive statistics earned him the MVP award ahead of his Inter Miami teammate Luis Suarez and former Liverpool striker Christian Benteke. This recognition adds to Messi’s already vast list of achievements, including eight Ballon d’Ors, four UEFA Champions League titles, and the 2022 World Cup.
In his acceptance speech, Messi reflected on the season’s challenges, stating, “We had a big dream of being MLS champions this year. It didn’t happen, but next year we’ll come back stronger.” He also shared advice with young fans: “Fight for your dreams, work hard, and fight for what you want. In the end, sacrifice and effort are rewarded.”
Messi’s MVP victory underscores his continuing dominance in football, and as Inter Miami’s captain, he has helped redefine the club’s identity in Major League Soccer. His next challenge will be the FIFA Club World Cup, where he hopes to continue his winning ways.
