In a significant moment of closure after a hard-fought and divisive election, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris officially reached out to President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday to concede the 2024 presidential race. The conversation marked a formal acknowledgment of Trump’s victory, with both leaders discussing the critical need for national unity and a peaceful transition of power.
A senior aide to Harris confirmed the call, stating that the Vice President underscored the importance of a smooth handover of authority and reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring a peaceful transition—contrasting it with the turbulence of 2020. According to the aide, Harris expressed her hope that Trump would strive to be a president who represents all Americans, regardless of party affiliation.
In a message to campaign staff, Jen O’Malley Dillon, Harris’ campaign chair, conveyed that Harris told Trump during the conversation, “She would work with President Biden to ensure a transition free from conflict, unlike what occurred in 2020.”
Trump’s campaign spokesperson, Steven Cheung, confirmed the call, noting that the President-elect praised Harris for her “strength, professionalism, and tenacity” throughout the grueling campaign. Both leaders, Cheung said, agreed on the vital importance of bringing the country together in the aftermath of the contentious election.
As the nation braces for the transfer of power, Harris is expected to make a public statement later Wednesday, reiterating her commitment to a peaceful and orderly handover of the presidency.
