Empfric Africa News Report — Over 10,000 cartons of organic eggs sold at Costco have been recalled due to potential salmonella contamination. The affected eggs, sourced from Handsome Brook Farms, a New York-based organic egg supplier, were sold under the Kirkland Signature brand.

The recall affects 24-count cartons of organic, pasture-raised eggs distributed to 25 Costco locations in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee, starting November 22. Customers should look for the carton numbers 327 and P1363, along with a use-by date of January 5, 2025.

Handsome Brook Farms reported that these eggs were not intended for retail sale and were mistakenly packaged and distributed. The company has since implemented additional controls and retraining to prevent future occurrences.

While no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall, salmonella poses significant health risks, particularly for children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems. Symptoms of salmonella infection include fever, diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting.

Consumers who purchased the recalled eggs are advised to discard them or return them to Costco for a full refund.

This incident is distinct from a recent salmonella outbreak linked to eggs from Milo’s Poultry Farms, which resulted in 93 reported illnesses and 34 hospitalizations across 12 states. Those eggs are no longer available in stores.
