On December 17, 2024, China executed Li Jianping, a former official from Inner Mongolia, who was convicted in connection with the country’s largest-ever corruption scandal, involving over $421 million. Li, aged 64, had previously served as the secretary of the Communist Party’s working committee for the Hohhot Economic and Technological Development Zone.
Li’s execution followed a death sentence handed down in September 2022 and reaffirmed by an appeals court in August 2024. The Supreme People’s Court approved the sentence, which was carried out by a court in Inner Mongolia, as reported by Xinhua, China’s state-run news agency.
Li was found guilty of embezzling approximately three billion yuan (over $421 million), making it the largest corruption case in China’s history. His case underscores the continued intensification of President Xi Jinping’s anti-corruption campaign, a central element of his leadership since 2012.
As part of the ongoing crackdown, over a million officials, including top military figures and two former defense ministers, have faced disciplinary actions.
