In a developing story, beauty queen Chidimma Adetshina is set to lose her South African identity and travel documents amid an ongoing nationality controversy. The Department of Home Affairs disclosed this decision during a parliamentary committee meeting on Tuesday.
Tommy Makhode, a senior official in the department, revealed that both Adetshina and her mother failed to meet a deadline to justify their eligibility for the documents. As a result, their IDs will be revoked.
The case has drawn significant attention following the allegations of fraud linked to their citizenship status. It has now been handed over to the Hawks, a specialized police unit focused on serious crimes, which is awaiting guidance from prosecutors on the next steps.
The investigation began after Adetshina gained prominence as a finalist in the Miss South Africa pageant, sparking debates about her eligibility given her mother’s Mozambican background and her father’s Nigerian roots. Adetshina, who claims to have been born in Soweto, has expressed pride in both her South African and Nigerian heritage.
Despite these challenges, Adetshina recently arrived in Mexico, where she is set to represent Nigeria at the Miss Universe competition on November 16. She previously withdrew from the Miss South Africa contest in August due to concerns over her mother’s potential “identity theft” in acquiring South African citizenship.
As the situation unfolds, both Adetshina and her mother have yet to comment on the department’s decision. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
