Prayers are pouring in for Bishop T.D. Jakes, the esteemed founder and pastor of The Potter’s House Church in Dallas, after he experienced a health scare while delivering a sermon on Sunday evening. The incident occurred as Jakes was finishing an impactful hour-long message, when he suddenly began to shudder and lowered his microphone. Members of the congregation quickly rushed to his side to offer assistance.
In a statement released shortly after the event, church officials confirmed that Jakes received prompt medical attention and is now stable. “Bishop T.D. Jakes experienced a brief health incident during today’s service and is currently under the care of medical professionals,” the statement read. “We are grateful for the overwhelming support and prayers from the community, and we ask for continued prayers during this time.”
While the church has not disclosed whether Jakes was hospitalized or the exact cause of the incident, family members provided an update later that evening. Sarah Jakes Roberts, the pastor’s daughter, and her husband, Toure Roberts, reassured the public on social media that the bishop was recovering well. “It could have been a tragic moment, but thanks to God’s mercy, Bishop Jakes is doing well and under the care of doctors,” Toure Roberts shared in an Instagram post. “He’s strong, and we appreciate everyone’s prayers.”
Sarah Jakes Roberts added, “We’re grateful to see him improving, especially as we approach the holiday season. This reminds us to cherish our loved ones and be thankful for the blessings in our lives.”
The outpouring of support has been widespread, with many members of The Potter’s House and church leaders from across the city sending their prayers for Jakes’ recovery. Among them was Pastor Frederick Haynes, who called Jakes a “once-in-a-generation gospel giant.”
Founded in 1996, The Potter’s House is one of the largest and most influential churches in the United States, with a congregation of over 30,000. Jakes has been a prominent figure in religious and political circles, having counseled U.S. presidents and spoken at major events, including the 2009 inauguration of President Barack Obama.
