In a tragic incident on Saturday, at least 64 individuals are feared dead after a wooden boat capsized in Zamfara State, northwest Nigeria. The boat was carrying 70 farmers across a river to their farmlands near Gummi town when the accident occurred.

Local authorities mobilized quickly for a rescue operation, and after three hours, six survivors were rescued from the water. Aminu Nuhu Falale, a local administrator involved in the rescue efforts, noted that this is the second such incident in the Gummi Local Government Area.

Emergency teams are continuing their search for more survivors, as overcrowding on the limited number of boats—only two available for over 900 farmers—has been a persistent issue. The region is already struggling with criminal gang activities and severe flooding, which recently displaced over 10,000 residents in the area.
