A suspect has been arrested and charged with murder in a tragic home invasion case in Michigan, where two men allegedly posed as utility workers to gain entry. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office has identified the suspect as 37-year-old Carlos Jose Hernandez, who is currently being sought for extradition from Louisiana. The search continues for a second suspect.

The incident took a grim turn when a 72-year-old man, identified as Hussein Murray, was found dead in the basement of his Rochester Hills home. His wife, who called 911, had been tied up with duct tape. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of death, with the sheriff’s office noting that the “gruesome nature of the injuries” made it unclear whether he was shot or bludgeoned.

According to the sheriff’s department, the suspects had initially visited the home the previous night, claiming to respond to a gas leak but were not allowed inside. When they returned the next day, they were permitted into the home, leading to Murray being taken to the basement under the pretense of checking for a leak.

Afterward, the suspects tied up Murray’s wife and left her in the house. She later assumed her husband had been kidnapped when he did not return. Security camera footage captured one suspect in a utility worker’s uniform and mask, falsely identifying himself as part of DTE Energy, a local utility company.

In response to the incident, DTE Energy has urged customers to remain vigilant against impersonators, advising them to request identification from anyone claiming to be a utility worker.

Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard expressed condolences, describing Murray as a dedicated community member who owned a jewelry and pawn shop. He emphasized that the killing appeared to be targeted rather than random, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by such deceptive tactics.

Authorities are calling for anyone with information regarding the second suspect to come forward. As the investigation continues, the community grapples with the shocking nature of the crime, underscoring the need for heightened awareness and safety measures.
