A man wanted by the FBI for over two decades has been apprehended in a remote village in Wales, UK, following an extensive manhunt. Andreas San Diego, 46, was arrested by U.S. authorities on Tuesday in connection with two bombings that took place in San Francisco, California, in August 2003. The bombings targeted a biotechnology corporation’s campus in Emeryville, detonation of two devices an hour apart, causing significant damage but no fatalities.
San Diego, who had been on the FBI’s “Most Wanted Terrorists” list for his involvement in the attacks, had been living under the radar in the quiet village since purchasing a detached bungalow for $536,000 in August 2023. His presence in the community went largely unnoticed until recent investigations connected him to the long-unsolved bombings. Local residents, who had interacted with him briefly, described him as an American who kept to himself. Observers noted that he seemed to lead a relatively low-profile life, with vegan food packaging occasionally seen in his bins.
The arrest followed a tip-off that led authorities to the secluded area where San Diego had been living. The FBI confirmed that he had been using a false identity to evade capture and was arrested without incident at his home. Investigators have since launched efforts to bring him back to the U.S. to face charges related to the bombings, which were part of a larger string of attacks linked to a group associated with anti-corporate terrorism.
The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in the case, bringing closure to a 20-year pursuit for justice. San Diego’s capture highlights the continued efforts of law enforcement agencies to track down and hold accountable individuals involved in terrorist activities, regardless of how long it takes or where they hide.
