Russia’s Defence Ministry has confirmed that its air force conducted strikes against Syrian rebel positions to bolster the Syrian army amid a significant escalation in the ongoing civil war. The airstrikes targeted areas in Aleppo and Idlib provinces, where forces opposed to President Bashar al-Assad have launched one of the most aggressive offensives seen in years.
According to Russian news agencies, the strikes were aimed at “militant concentrations, command posts, depots, and artillery positions.” The Russian Centre for the Reconciliation of the Enemy Parties in Syria reported that approximately 300 rebel fighters were killed in these operations, marking a notable shift in the conflict where frontlines had remained relatively static since 2020.
This military action underscores Russia’s commitment to supporting its ally, President Assad, in the face of renewed rebel offensives. The Syrian civil war, now in its thirteenth year, has seen fluctuating dynamics, and this latest escalation could further complicate the already volatile situation in the region.
As the conflict continues to evolve, the implications of Russia’s military support for Assad will be closely monitored by international observers, particularly given the potential for increased violence and displacement in affected areas.
