A Texas man has been arrested after allegedly filing for and finalizing a divorce from his wife without her consent or knowledge.
According to Harris County deputies, the investigation began in May when Edna Nixon contacted authorities, claiming that her husband, 51-year-old Paul Nixon, had filed for divorce in February without her awareness. Concerned and confused by the situation, Edna reported the matter to law enforcement, prompting a thorough investigation into the claims.
Deputies revealed that Paul Nixon had submitted forged documents to the court in an attempt to finalize the divorce. Among the fraudulent paperwork was a waiver of service, which included false contact information, such as a bogus address and phone number for Edna Nixon. Authorities said the forged documents were accepted by the court, ultimately leading to the divorce being finalized under false pretenses.
After reviewing the case, deputies determined that Nixon had intentionally provided misleading and fabricated information, and his actions constituted a serious case of fraud. Paul Nixon was arrested and charged in connection with the illegal filing.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the potential for identity theft and fraud within legal proceedings, raising questions about safeguards in the divorce process. Edna Nixon has yet to comment publicly on the incident.
