In a shocking incident at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, Army Specialist Wooster Rancy, 21, has been arrested and charged with the murder of fellow soldier Sarah Roque, 23. Roque, a sergeant and mine dog handler from Ligonier, Indiana, was reported missing after she failed to report for duty last week. Tragically, her body was discovered in a dumpster on the base.
The investigation into Roque’s death is being treated as a homicide, with Major General Christopher Beck expressing deep sorrow over the incident. “As a commander and a leader, this is a tragedy. This is something that we never want to happen,” he stated, emphasizing the impact on Roque’s family and her unit.
Rancy, originally from Miami and a combat engineer who joined the Army in 2022, is also facing charges of obstruction of justice. He is currently in pretrial confinement awaiting a preliminary hearing. The motives behind the alleged murder remain unclear at this time.
Roque had an illustrious military career since enlisting in 2020, earning several commendations including the Army Commendation Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Major General Beck highlighted her dual role as a dedicated soldier and a beloved member of her community, stating, “Sarah not only served our country bravely and honorably, she was also a daughter, a sister, and a friend to many.”
As investigations continue, the Army community mourns the loss of a promising young soldier.
