Minneapolis, MN – A man has been arrested in connection with the shooting of his neighbor, Davis Moturi, who suffered severe injuries, including a gunshot wound to the neck, after months of alleged racial harassment. The incident, which has drawn significant community backlash against the Minneapolis Police Department, highlights ongoing issues around public safety and police response in the city.

Authorities report that Moturi was shot while performing yard work, with his injuries including a fractured spine and ribs. The accused shooter, John Sawchak, was taken into custody after a tense standoff with police lasting several hours. He faces charges of attempted murder, felony assault, and stalking, among others. Despite the gravity of the accusations, Sawchak’s attorney stated that he denies all allegations.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara expressed regret over the department’s delayed response, stating, “We failed this victim 100%.” Moturi’s family had previously contacted the police nearly 20 times regarding Sawchak’s threats and harassment, leading to widespread criticism of the police’s failure to act decisively.

In the weeks leading up to the shooting, Moturi, who is Black, was reportedly subjected to racially charged verbal harassment by Sawchak, who is White. Community members voiced their concern, with Moturi’s wife stating, “My heart is broken. We aren’t safe in our home,” reflecting the fear that has gripped the neighborhood.

The Minneapolis Police Department, already under scrutiny following the murder of George Floyd in 2020, is now facing renewed calls for accountability. Critics argue that the department’s approach to handling domestic situations, particularly involving mental health issues, has proven ineffective and dangerous.

In a recent court appearance, Sawchak was denied bail and remains in custody. The judge noted the presence of multiple active warrants against him, including one related to threats made against Moturi.

The incident has sparked a debate on police methods, with city leaders urging for better strategies to address violent crime while balancing community safety. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey defended the police’s cautious approach, stating that they were avoiding escalating a potentially deadly situation.

As the community processes this shocking event, Moturi remains hopeful for recovery. Speaking from his hospital bed, he expressed his gratitude for his family’s support and the community’s concern for their safety. “I’m just glad that my lovely wife is here and that I am still alive,” he said.

With the investigation ongoing, the Minneapolis Police Department has committed to a thorough review of their response to the incident, emphasizing the need for improved strategies to protect residents from escalating violence and harassment.
