In a troubling series of events just days before Election Day, ballot drop boxes in Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington, were set ablaze early Monday morning. Authorities are investigating the incidents as connected, raising concerns over voter safety and election integrity.
The Portland Police Bureau reported that an “incendiary device” was discovered inside a ballot box in the Central City district. Fortunately, security personnel managed to extinguish the flames before significant damage occurred, with reports indicating that only three ballots were affected. However, in Vancouver, local officials stated that potentially “hundreds” of ballots were damaged due to a similar act of arson.
Police noted that an identical Volvo was seen at both locations, and the nature of the incendiary device used in Portland closely resembled what was found in Vancouver. Authorities have characterized the actions as targeted and intentional, emphasizing the need for increased security around polling locations.
As the investigation unfolds, officials are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Empfric Africa will continue to monitor this developing story, highlighting the importance of a fair and secure electoral process.
