Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States and recipient of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 29, at the age of 100. He died at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his loved ones. Carter was the longest-living president in U.S. history.
President Carter is survived by his four children: Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away earlier this year, and one grandchild.
Chip Carter, his son, expressed deep admiration for his father, calling him a “hero” not only to their family but also to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and selfless love. “My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the world through these common beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we are grateful for the honor of seeing his values and legacy carried on,” he said.
Public memorials will be held in both Atlanta and Washington, D.C., followed by a private burial in Plains, Georgia. The full schedule for President Carter’s state funeral, including public events and motorcade details, is expected to be released by the Joint Task Force-National Capital Region in the coming days.
In lieu of flowers, the Carter family has requested that donations be made to The Carter Center, a nonprofit organization founded by the former president and his wife to promote peace, human rights, and global health.
