In a significant turn of events in Ghana’s 2024 presidential race, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, the candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has officially conceded defeat and extended his congratulations to former President John Mahama of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Bawumia, speaking in a televised address on Sunday, acknowledged that, according to the party’s internal results, Mahama and the NDC had secured a decisive victory in both the presidential and parliamentary elections. His speech came ahead of any official announcement from the Electoral Commission of Ghana, which has yet to release the final, certified results of the nationwide elections held on Saturday.
In his address, Bawumia expressed his gratitude to the Ghanaian people for their participation in the election and pledged to support the peaceful transition of power. “The people have spoken, and I respect their decision,” Bawumia stated. “I congratulate President-elect John Mahama on his victory, and I wish him the best in leading our nation forward.”
Bawumia’s concession marks a pivotal moment in Ghana’s democratic process, as the country is seen as one of the most stable democracies in Africa. His acknowledgment of Mahama’s victory comes after a tense and highly competitive election campaign, with both parties vying for the presidency and control of the country’s legislative body.
The NPP candidate also called for unity and healing, urging Ghanaians to come together in the spirit of nation-building. “This is a time for all of us to set aside our differences and work towards the development of our beloved country,” he added.
As of now, the Electoral Commission has yet to verify the results, and both local and international observers are closely monitoring the situation. While Bawumia’s early concession has been widely acknowledged, the final confirmation of Mahama’s victory will come after the Commission completes its official tally and resolves any outstanding matters.
The election, which took place across the country on Saturday, was marked by a high voter turnout and a peaceful atmosphere, despite the usual challenges of political campaigns. With Mahama’s victory, the NDC is expected to return to power after a gap of several years, during which the NPP held the presidency under Nana Akufo-Addo.
As the nation waits for the final official results, the focus now shifts to the transition process, with both parties calling for calm and adherence to Ghana’s constitutional processes. With Bawumia’s concession, the stage is set for a peaceful handover of power, as Ghana continues to strengthen its democratic traditions.
